AZ Liability Insurance – AZ Auto Insurance

Arizona requires that every registered vehicle have AZ liability insurance coverage. There are two types of liability coverage on your AZ auto insurance policy:

First: Bodily injury liability gives coverage in case another individual(s) hits your car. This coverage is for the injuries to their body. It can also include lost wages, pain and suffering. The state of Arizona requires that you carry a least the minimum amount of $15,000 for each individual and $30,000 for two or more people.

Second: Property damage liability coverage is also required. Drivers must have a minimum of $10,000 of property damage coverage to pay for damages to other cars and property.

What is Comprehensive and Collision Coverage on my AZ Auto Insurance Policy?

Comprehensive and collision coverage is what covers your actual car itself. As listed below, they are separated on all AZ auto insurance policies. This may vary per state. Both comprehensive and collision coverage on your Arizona auto insurance policy have a deductible. This is first paid by you followed by the insurance company who will pay any damages over and above a specific amount.

Comprehensive coverage also known as “comp” covers your car for the following:

  • Storms and natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. In Arizona, the most common natural disaster is flooding.
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Broken Windows
  • Animal Damage
Additionally, collision coverage is also coverage for your car. This coverage typically pays out when your automobile is damaged during an accident involving other cars or objects.

AZ Auto Insurance – Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist:

On your AZ auto insurance policy you have the option to purchase uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage (also know as UM/UIM). These two coverages pay for the personal injuries acquired by you and all passengers in your vehicle when you were involved in the auto accident. This coverage applies when you are not at fault. The UIM (underinsured motorist) coverage goes into effect when someone hits you and doesn’t have enough of their own liability insurance to pay for your medical bills. UM will not only pay for your medical bills, but can also pay for your lost wages. The UM (uninsured motorist) coverage works similarly, but applies when the other party has no insurance at all. Keep in mind that these two coverages only pay for medical bills and lost wages. As such, if you’re involved in an accident where you’re not at fault and the other party does not have insurance, the damage your vehicle acquires will be covered by your UM/UIM.

Why Do I Need Medical Payment Coverage On My AZ Auto Insurance Policy?

Your AZ auto insurance policy does not provide coverage for medical expenses unless you purchase additional coverage known as Medical Payments (or Med Pay). Medical payments coverage will pay out when you are involved in an auto accident, regardless of fault, to any passengers that are in your vehicle. There is an extensive range of coverage that you can purchase for this reason. Each AZ insurance company has their own limits as to the amount of medical payments you can add to your Arizona auto insurance policy. Your medical payments coverage will also pay out if you are involved in an accident when in another party’s vehicle. For example, if you are in your friend’s car and he is in an accident, you can file a claim on your Arizona auto insurance policy for your medical expenses. This would apply regardless of your friend having coverage or not.

Other Items on your AZ Auto Insurance Policy to Keep in Mind:

All vehicles that are registered in the state of Arizona must be insured by a company licensed to provide insurance within the state. Residents who are in the state on a short-term basis, such as military personnel, may be able to submit a De-Insured certificate, allowing them to keep their vehicle legal without the need to purchase AZ auto insurance. However, such vehicles would not be able to be driven on the roadway.

Insurance Company Responsibilities
The insurance companies are required to notify the MVD if a policy is cancelled or allowed to expire. The state is also notified of new policies that are issued. If the state is notified that a driver has dropped their insurance coverage, the driver will be notified and required to show proof of insurance on the vehicle in question.

Choosing Arizona Insurance Companies
There is a wealth of companies in Arizona offering auto insurance. You can go with a nationally recognized company or you can choose to use a local group. The following are some tips to help you find the best insurance company for your needs:

Reputation – Before making a final decision, take the time to research the reputation of the companies you’re considering. Look over their ratings from companies like JD Power and A.M. Best to choose one that is financially solid and will provide you with excellent customer service.
Referrals – Talk to friends and family to see who they use and who they are happy with.
Discounts – Some companies offer more discounts than others. Find out what your final rate would be after applying all discounts and then make a decision about the company.
Coverage levels –When comparing companies, be sure that you are comparing the same coverage levels across the board. This way, you’re truly comparing apples to apples and can ensure that you truly get the lowest premium for the coverage that best suits your needs.

Finally, when purchasing auto insurance in Arizona, you should be sure that you opt for higher coverage levels than the state minimum. Insurance is meant to protect you from lawsuits that could prove extremely costly. The state minimum levels will not shield most assets from lawsuits, and you could easily face wage garnishments to cover the difference between those low coverage levels and the actual damages. To truly protect yourself, choose coverage levels that are high enough to protect your assets and opt for a higher deductible to bring Arizona auto insurance rates back down.
